Speed Matters

One thing I keenly remember from previous exams is time. The exams are brutal in this regard, as you cannot return to a question. So all answers are final. With this in mind reading the question quickly, but carefully is critical. Moreso than you would usually experience in day to day work life. So you have no ability to sit and think about something and come back later. Therefore to prepare myself better I will need to set tight timescales on practice tests, labs and activities.

How to Practice Time Management?

After some thought, I think the best route for time management might involve not only setting time limits for practice questions and labs, but also for study notes. This will in turn force myself to take each topic (assuming broken into small enough chunks) and summarise key points. However I will need to determine a way to allocate enough time to not impact detail but keep the challenge. One method I am leaning towards would be to use each video I am using to study. Then allocating time for each second the video lasts as a multiple. So as an example say a 3 minute video and a multiplier of 2.5 so I would get 7.5 minutes or 450 seconds. But again this will need careful thought and some tailoring to get correct.

Subnetting

One way I remember being told to save time is to get the basic stuff done right and quick. A prime example of this is subnetting. Subnetting is one of the basic expectations of a network engineer (despite in the real world a calculator being one Google away). So the best way to do subnetting quick is practice, which thankfully there are apps for this. The one I use is called Subnetting Practice, I would link it but it appears to no longer be available on the play store. However I might try some other equivalents and link in the future, however the app I am using will work for the time being. I think doing 5 minutes a day over my whole study period should make this lighting quick, especially starting it so early on.
